This round lacquer box is inspired by artifacts unearthed from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙)—a legendary ruler of the Zeng state during the Warring States period (c. 433 BCE). Discovered in Suizhou, Hubei province, his tomb revealed over 200 exceptional lacquer pieces, showcasing the pinnacle of Chu-style lacquer art.

The painted phoenix and fish pattern (彩绘凤鱼纹) adorning the surface combines mythical and natural motifs—the phoenix symbolizing nobility and rebirth, fish representing abundance and harmony. Crafted using traditional techniques on a wooden body, layers of natural lacquer are applied and decorated with vibrant mineral pigments, sealed beneath a protective finish.
