This antique-style eared cup is inspired by lacquerware masterpieces unearthed from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙)—a legendary ruler of the Zeng state during the Warring States period (c. 433 BCE). Discovered in Suizhou, Hubei province, his tomb yielded over 200 exceptional lacquer artifacts, revealing the sophistication of Chu-style lacquer art at its peak.
The cloud pattern (云纹) adorning the surface is an ancient motif symbolizing harmony and celestial blessing, rendered in classic black and vermilion lacquer. Each cup is handcrafted using traditional techniques—wooden body coated with multiple layers of natural lacquer, then polished to a warm, luminous finish.
Originally used as a wine vessel for ceremonial feasts, this eared cup now serves beautifully as a unique sake cup, tea tray accent, or cultural display piece. Holding it connects you directly to Marquis Yi's era—a tangible fragment of China's ancient lacquer heritage.
